What is A Herb Grinder?

A herb grinder is a small device, usually cylindrical in shape, which is used to break down herbs into smaller, more manageable pieces. It consists of two (or more) interlocking pieces that rotate when turned. As the pieces are rotated, the material placed inside is shredded.

Breakdown of the general components of a typical herb grinder

  • Lid: The top section of the grinder. It typically contains teeth that will mesh with the teeth of the second piece when the grinder is turned.
  • Grinder Section: This is the main section that contains another set of teeth. As the lid is rotated, these teeth shred the herb placed between them.
  • Screen Section: Some grinders have a third section beneath the grinder section. This section contains a fine mesh screen that allows only the smallest particles to fall through. This collected material is often referred to as "kief" or "pollen" and is prized for its potency.
  • Bottom Section: Below the screen section, there's often a compartment that catches the fine particles that have passed through the screen.
